September
(Remember?)

Heavy fog in early morning
Special outfit (saved to wear)
The smell of new lined paper
Bus fumes hanging in the air~

Metallic slam of lockers
Shiny buffed and polished tile
A sea of sleepy faces
A good friend’s much-missed smile~

Voices of the teachers
The sounding of the bell
Confusion and uncertainty
The mystery meat from hell~

Static on the intercom
New girl from Albuquerque
Someone draws stuff on the board:
A face, a skull, a turkey~

Strategies and schedules
A plan for organizing
Brains and glands and hormones
All ripe for agonizing:

Should I be bright and perky?
Should I be cool and tough?
Will ________ever like me?
Or Is who I am enough?

This English book is heavy
Just one of many tomes
Impossible to carry
So just how will I get home?

But then the final bell goes off
The halls resound with “Yay!”
(Which means this has been classified
A satisfactory day)
